The Ultimate Guide to Warehouse Design Ideas for Seamless Operations Quality Material Handling Inc Blog

warehouse design

There are a few basic and standard warehouse floor plans—U-shaped, I-shaped, and L-shaped. Plus, their easy-access design makes them an efficient alternative to stocking small goods in closed boxes, and they can be easily color-coded. The name is a bit deceiving, as pallet racks generally hold more weight than HD shelving. Pay attention to the weight ratings on the shelves you purchase; for safety reasons, it’s important to adhere to weight stipulations assigned by the shelving unit’s manufacturer. Once you have calculated your storage space, the next step would be to plot your workspace and plan for equipment.

How Industry 4.0 is Interwoven into Modern Warehouse Design.

This step is dedicated to instilling the essence of flexibility, ensuring that the warehouse can seamlessly adapt to changes in inventory volume, operational processes, and emerging industry trends. In conclusion, Step 7, the Integration of Technology, is pivotal in transforming warehouses into technologically advanced hubs of operational excellence. Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), automation solutions, and the promise of future technologies like AI and IoT collectively contribute to heightened efficiency, accuracy, and adaptability. The strategic implementation of technology ensures not only current optimization but also prepares the warehouse for the dynamic landscape of technological advancements. As we progress through the strategic steps of designing an effective warehouse layout, Step 5 focuses on the paramount task of harnessing vertical space.

Step 1: Comprehensive Inventory Assessment

From mapping out the layout to selecting the right equipment and testing the plan, each step plays a vital role in achieving an optimized and well-functioning warehouse. The U shape is used to keep major warehouse traffic flow separate and streamlined. Keeping the incoming and outgoing materials on parallel sides of the operation helps to avoid bottlenecks. This flow of goods is also helpful in minimizing the available space necessary.

Bulk Storage Layout

The collaborative dance between humans and robots creates a dynamic synergy that amplifies overall operational efficiency. The precision of Pick to Light lies in its ability to reduce cognitive load on warehouse staff. Visual cues direct pickers to the right locations, eliminating guesswork and enhancing accuracy. This precision extends to batch picking scenarios, where multiple orders can be fulfilled simultaneously with orchestrated efficiency.

Step 2: Space Evaluation

Implementing a culture of continuous improvement is essential for sustained workflow efficiency. Regularly assess and reassess the design, seeking feedback from the operational staff, and leveraging performance metrics. Implementing Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), RFID technology, and real-time tracking can provide invaluable insights into the movement of goods. This data-driven approach allows for proactive decision-making and adjustments to further optimize the workflow. Maximizing vertical space aligns with principles of environmental sustainability. By making the most of existing warehouse space, businesses can minimize the need for land expansion, contributing to reduced environmental impact and resource consumption.

Plan for Space Optimization

U-shaped warehouses are good general designs that work for a large number of situations. L-shapes help reduce back-and-forth movement, which is helpful for large products and controlling traffic flow. The best warehouse design for your business really depends on a number of factors.

Decisions Guided by Strategic Storage Zones

While designing your warehouse layout, it is critical to comply with the guidelines provided by the local authorities. Abiding by these guidelines not only ensures the safety of your workers, equipment, or other valuable assets but also helps you avoid fines and legal problems for your business. It’s important to make sure your warehouse’s layout does not impede the movement and productivity of your employees. The layout should also be designed while keeping the future in mind — you should have enough space so new employees, products, and materials can be added comfortably down the line.

This exploration delves into the intricacies of each technology, unraveling the symphony that propels order picking into a new era of speed, precision, and operational excellence. The integration of these systems creates a unified platform for real-time monitoring, data analytics, and control. WMS integration enhances visibility into warehouse operations, facilitating informed decision-making and optimization. As the warehouse evolves and business dynamics change, the selected technologies should adapt seamlessly to increased demands. Future-proofing the warehouse layout ensures that investments in automation continue to yield returns over the long term. In the realm of bulk storage, pallet shuttles shine as architects of efficiency.

The reception or staging area is crucial in receiving deliveries, implementing quality control, and initiating product sorting. Designate a separate and spacious reception area to prevent bottlenecks during unloading. A clear separation ensures accurate product inspections and provides ample space for sorting activities. A forklift, ideal for indoor work and transporting heavy items, requires wider aisles (12-13 feet), while pallet jacks, used for shorter distances, provide more flexibility.

This information serves as the canvas upon which the entire layout will be crafted. The insights gained from the inventory assessment form the basis for developing an informed layout strategy. By knowing the unique attributes and demand characteristics of each product, you can strategically position items within the warehouse for optimal efficiency.

With Matterport’s Facilities Management features, capture your building in photo-realistic 3D to create a virtual version of your warehouse. The digital twin includes accurate measurements of the interior, exterior, and exact dimensions of all your equipment. From there, use virtual staging to make design modifications to your floor space. For example, you want to try out a U-shaped design, but after staging, you find that your aisles don’t have enough clearance for materials handling equipment like forklifts. You’re then able to change it up to find a layout that works better for your space with the convenience of a digital model. But following some basic principles of efficient warehouse layout can guide you through this sometimes stressful design process.

Implementing visual cues contributes to a proactive safety culture within the warehouse. Technology is not static, and neither should be its integration within the warehouse. Continuous monitoring of system performance, regular software updates, and the incorporation of new features are essential. This proactive approach ensures that the warehouse stays ahead of the curve in technological advancements. Although every warehouse owner and manager has unique needs for their layout, they often use the same starting point.

For Google’s Venice campus, HLW International designed offices that would fit in with the surrounding beach community. A “boardwalk” joins three buildings, creating a seaside aesthetic, plus areas for work and play gatherings. In addition to amenities like a juice bar and massage rooms, the designs include a panoramic Google maps screen, a rock climbing wall, and a technology-free mid-century modern meeting room. Toms Shoes founder, Blake Mycoskie, worked closely with Shimoda Design Group to create a remarkably expressive space for the social good-oriented fashion company. The Toms Headquarters in Santa Monica is a 70K square-foot warehouse and office space. The employee amenities are consistent with Toms brand statements, including a wellness center for free yoga and pilates classes, and pockets for socializing, like a coffee bar serving up Toms roast. Toms Headquarters definitively shrugs off a stuffy corporate aesthetic with a blue slide that winds down from loft space to the main floor. For the production house behind Lost, Alias, and Cloverfield, Shimoda reimagined a historic, 18K square-foot building in Santa Monica. Exposed brick, concrete, and steelwork make the office feel stripped back and open, but the structure conceals the many rooms dedicated to the production process.

BUILDING A MUDROOM/LAUNDRY ROOM BETWEEN OUR PLAYROOM AND THE GARAGE  //  This project was also part of our renovation project last winter and spring and made this house so much more livable for a family with young children. The new mudroom now connects the playroom (where we ripped out carpet, put in hardwood floors, and replaced a set of windows with a wide doorway) to the previously detached garage and loft. I actually got the idea for hanging a polished nickel train rack with additional storage space for towels from a previous rental home of ours. And I love that it gives us room to stack a few extra clean towels in addition to the ones on hooks hanging next to the shower.

Preppy Brand Makes its Dallas Debut Count at Design Darling’s New Store

Here you can see the pool the way it looked when we bought the house. It was a perfectly functional pool for adults, but as a family with young kids, we felt strongly about being able to install an automatic cover and to replace all the gravel and ground coverings with a proper patio and lawn. The brand, which is beloved for its collection of classic-preppy clothing and accessories — think Natucket-style Americana — has long had my heart. I have countless pieces from Tuckernuck in my closet; my favorite recent purchase being a floral summer dress designed by Emerson Fry and handmade in India. This bookcase previously lived everywhere from our living room in Dallas to our dining room in Greenwich and I’m so happy we could find a home for it in Teddy’s nursery. It’s the perfect spot for books, stuffed animals, and baskets filled with diapers, wipes, and blankets.

To build the composition, hundreds of oak-clad units are assembled in vertical layers—storage boxes on the bottom, hands-on areas in the middle, displays at the top, and a cantilevering cornice at the tippy-top. One side of the wall is devoted to product placement, the other to feel-good marketing. Aidlin Darling did “a lot of painstaking studies,” Chiang says, to figure out how the electrical cables and outlets necessary to power demo products and video screens make their way through this labyrinth while remaining out of sight. This unanticipated insert has a surprising origin story. “We thought about the precedent of a cabinet of curiosities,” says Kent Chiang, principal and project architect at San Francisco–based Aidlin Darling Design.

The next day I popped back in to Amy Berry Home for more shopping and to reconvene with Gailliot and Votta. Fueled by Whispering Angel rose and a multi-course meal by Cassandra Fine Catering, the girls in attendance stayed late, chatting all things fashion, design, and upcoming summer travel plans.

OUR BACKYARD PROJECT

Speaking of matching the wallpaper, I ordered a custom roman shade in the same fabric and even though we rarely bother with closing the shade in this room, it’s a nice finishing touch that instantly made the room feel more polished and pulled together. I’d been coveting this Quadrille Arbre de Matisse wallpaper forever and decided to splurge in this small space. My dad installed the beadboard and chair rail to add a little architectural interest and keep things light and bright, plus it meant we could get away with ordering half as much wallpaper. We used this inexpensive beadboard and this chair rail (both painted this color) and it looks like it’s always been part of the house. RIPPING OUT CARPET AND REFINISHING HARDWOOD FLOORS  //  This was the only project we undertook before we moved in last July and it made a world of difference. You can find details on our hardwood floors, the floor stain we chose, and the white paint color throughout our house in this post.

The next piece I ordered was this custom changer from ducduc. I knew we didn’t have space for a separate changing table and dresser, so this piece functions as both with a separate topper we can remove once we’re past our diaper-changing years. My mom and I made a trip to their showroom in New York to check out all the different options in person and decided on this Savannah dresser with five drawers, nickel hardware, and interior drawers custom painted to match the wallpaper. The quality of their pieces is incredible and the sky is truly the limit in terms of customizing each design to fit your space.

There was another long delay waiting for the company that sprays the concrete, but the day they arrived was one of the most exciting days of the project! Then they backfilled with dirt around the new shape. After relocating the stone wall that was originally beyond the old pool! This was day #1 of work on the pool, removing the old oversized concrete surround. This is a perfect piece for layering or to wear on its own. The day of the dinner — held the evening before the store’s grand opening — Berry was busy putting the finishing touches on her store, but held off on installing her full line of furniture and accessories.

UPGRADING LIGHTING FIXTURES

The firm reinterpreted 17th-century vitrines housing taxidermy and astrolabes into a 120-foot-long, S-shaped, compartmentalized, interactive display of the latest Google devices. Will love wearing with pants or shorts in the summer. It was my fist time ordering from this sight and it definitely won’t be my last.

In place, she installed two long tables covered in blue-and-white tablecloths and china. It feels like I have loved it for years, it is so soft and comfortable. When the dinner hour rang, guests paraded in — thrilled to shop Tuckernuck’s summery wares and sneak a peek at Berry’s much-anticipated store. This course explores the features, surface materials, and design options for rooftop deck systems and provides an overview of recommended planning and installation guidelines. Softest material, beautiful color, well worth the price. I love the saying and that I subtly send a beautiful message to all who bother to look.

The cane crib was our next decorating decision and I’m so happy with how it looks in here. It was hard to get a photo without a wide angle lens but it’s absolutely beautiful in person! I wanted to avoid putting a bunch of nails in the newly hung wallpaper so we went with the floor stand option for our baby monitor (which we continue to be obsessed with — more in this post). When I first dreamt up the nursery, I imagined hanging a few pieces of art, but we ultimately decided it would actually detract from the wallpaper and opted to keep things simple.

I had ordered these Matouk bath towels for my parents last summer as a housewarming present when they moved in so it was fun to pick out a few coordinating pieces to complete the space before photographing it. Matouk makes some of the most exquisite bath and bed linens and these Cairo towels are no exception. The azure blue trim is a perfect match with the Thibaut “Bungalow” wallpaper my mom chose for the space! I ordered samples of this 3″ x 6″ white Thassos marble subway tile to coordinate with the color of the floor tile and it was a welcome upgrade from the dated square tiles that were here when we bought the house. We used the same shower head and valve trim as we did in our hall bathroom. And then I decided on these more traditional shower door handles that are so weighty and beautiful in person.

One of the biggest differences in the renovation came from moving the only window in the bathroom from the far wall opposite the door to the right wall opposite the shower. This not only made the house much more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing from the exterior, but it gave us a lot more light since the relocated window overlooks our backyard instead of the roofline over our garage.

We considered a number of different gliders and I’m really glad we went with this one in the optic white. (The exact style is no longer available but this one is similar in style and price!) It’s risky to buy a chair without sitting in it first but thankfully it’s super comfy and the color is the perfect crisp white. I topped it with this adorable appliqué pillow that matches the blue in the wallpaper pretty closely.

BUILDING A DOUBLE VANITY WITH STORAGE TOWERS

It’s such a bright and happy sight when you first walk into the room! I wish this exact piece were still available, but I found a similar style here. The Flintstone House Hillsborough, California

Government has the right to enforce public safety codes, and to ensure property owners don't impinge on the rights of other property owners, said Tim Iglesias, a property professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law. Private property has been regulated in the United States since colonial times, he noted. The interior of the house is filled with Stone-Age-like features from floor to ceiling and even furniture and artwork. A pigasaurus as a garbage disposal, a woolly mammoth as a shower, a sprinkler and even a vacuum cleaner and other animal appliances and domestic items are commonly used by Fred and his wife, Wilma. While the eccentrically designed home nestled into a hillside overlooking the Crystal Springs Reservoir has its critics, it also has some fans. Tourists and travelers who spot the property from Highway 280 often stop to take photos and share their wonderment of the house on social media.

The town sent three notices from December 2017 through August ordering that Fang stop altering the property, but officials said those requests were ignored. After a hearing over the issue in October, the town’s administrative panel decided that some of the prehistoric metal animals qualified as “unenclosed structures” and required a building permit and other approvals. “The stone family cannot always stay in the stone age,” Fang said, her explanation for the property’s constant evolution. Several years ago, Fang was just searching for a nice, quiet place to retire — someplace where she could downsize a bit from her longtime Hillsborough home. Then she toured the domed abode, designed in the 1970s by William Nicholson, and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to purchase the property she’d grown accustomed to seeing from the car on drives.

It’s been over a year since the so-called Flintstone House at 45 Berryessa Way in Hillsborough went on the market for $4.2 million, and it’s still without a buyer. “The parties have reached an amicable resolution of the case to the satisfaction of all the parties, such that the improvements made to the Flintstone House will be permitted to remain,” the settlement states, according to the Palo Alto Daily Post. Florence Fang, former publisher of the San Francisco Examiner and chairwoman for the Independent Newspaper Group, bought the house for $2.8 million in 2017. Our psychological, our cellular makeup, is that we're a little more comfortable in soft structures than we are in a box.

Florence Fang, the home’s owner, will receive $125,000 from the town to cover legal costs from her lawsuit, according to the settlement agreement. Fang must also apply for building permits for the exterior of her home, which will be approved by the town once submitted, according to town records. It’s one of the most iconic pieces of domestic architecture in the Bay Area — the Flintstone House! You may have noticed the bright orange and purple structure while driving northbound on 280 in Hillsborough.

"They wanted her to put a tree in front of the dinosaur, so you couldn't see the dinosaur." At a media tour of the property this week, Alioto said Fang will respond to the lawsuit with a counter-claim, but she declined to discuss specifics. She said Fang's constitutional rights to free speech and religion were violated. Mark Hudak, an attorney for Hillsborough, says the town prides itself on its rural, woodsy feel, and rules are in place "so neighbors don't have to look at your version of what you would like to have, and you don't have to look at theirs."

Garbis Bezujian, one of Fang’s neighbors, told the panel during the hearing that he could see some of the landscaping from his house, which is on the same cul-de-sac as the Flintstone House. He said the property “appeared to be outside the norms for the town” and “creates lots of questions,” according to the panel. Despite its nickname, the house, conceived by Bay Area architect William Nicholson, was not necessarily designed to resemble that of the modern stone age family. Rather, Nicholson’s idea was just for a house where every surface is curved.

While the rocky structure appears convincing, the space is anything but dark, dank, or cold. A years-long legal battle with her hometown hasn’t slowed down Florence Fang, owner of the famed Flintstone House on a hill overlooking Interstate 280. The oddly shaped house, currently painted red and purple, was designed by architect William Nicholson and built in 1976. Fang, a prominent philanthropist who once published the San Francisco Examiner, bought the property in June 2017 for $2.8 million.

She most recently covered Orange County for The Times and has written extensively about criminal trials, housing, politics and government. In 2020, Fry was part of the team that was a Pulitzer finalist for its coverage of a boat fire that killed 34 people off the coast of Santa Barbara. Fry came to The Times from the Daily Pilot, where she covered coastal cities, education and crime. An Orange County native, Fry started her career as an intern at the Orange County Register. The panel decided the landscape decorations needed to be removed by December because they had not been approved and levied a $200 fine for the violation. Fang paid the citation but did not remove the decorations, according to the complaint.

Fang won’t discuss details of the settlement this spring, but is now free to celebrate the quirkiest piece of real estate in the Bay Area in peace. She’s recently added a hulking Bigfoot statue to the patio and a Gold Rush-themed room, which Fang showed off to the Bay Area News Group this week in a rare tour of the orange, red and purple-domed home on Berryessa Way. Now, she’s planning a giant beanstalk and a phoenix rising from the ashes.

But at least in its current form, officials and some residents do not to want the home, which evokes the 1960s cartoon, in their backyard. A panel of code enforcement officials last fall declared many recent renovations to the home to be a public nuisance, according to a town order, and have asked a judge to do the same. The suit alleges that the homeowner did not secure the proper permits and approvals for the changes. Legendary TV host Dick Clark and his wife are selling their home in Malibu for $3.5 million. Normally, a celebrity selling a piece of real estate in California is nothing to write about, but, in this case, it's nearly impossible not to share images of the media tycoon's Flintstones-inspired house. Based on the classic 60's cartoon, the specially-designed residence features a cave-like atmosphere with high ceilings.

Round built-in shelves line the walls of the kitchen along with fun details like these swirling designs in the ceiling. Inside the tallest orange dome is a sitting area called the conversation pit. An orange upholstered couch curves around the front of the fireplace, and a big window looks out onto a succulent garden and patio. Today, The Flintstone House is as well known for its architecture as it is for its sporadic tenants, which has led to several urban legends surrounding the home’s ownership. It’s also said that several famous Silicon Valley investors have lived there as well.

Town officials from Hillsborough sued Florence Fang, stating that her property doesn't comply with the community's code. The latest battle in the war between government rules and property rights is playing out in a posh San Francisco suburb, where a retired publishing mogul has installed an elaborate homage to "The Flintstones" family. The bold, bulbous house is surrounded by Stone Age sculptures inspired by the 1960s cartoon, along with aliens and other oddities. Some of her giant cartoonish statues drew a lawsuit in 2019 from Hillsborough, which said Fang hadn’t obtained all the necessary permits and labeled the property a nuisance.

While The Flintstone House is marveled at by many passersby, it’s also loathed by many Hillsborough residents. In the mid-1980s, the home began to show serious wear as water runoff on the steep hillside caused it to sink and the walls began to develop deep cracks. Word spread of such problems and several neighbors pushed to have the home removed.

A small town in the San Francisco Bay Area is apparently unamused by improvements that one of its high-profile residents has made to a distinctive property known as the Flintstone House. The house, designed in 1976 by Bay Area architect William Nicholson, sat vacant for over a year before Fang purchased it for $2.8 million in 2017. “This cross complaint is meant to divert attention from the core fact that Mrs. Fang installed a very large project without getting permits, and blaming our enforcement staff isn’t going to change what she did,” Hudan said. "They want everything removed. They want the dinosaurs removed," Alioto said.

The Flintstone Home is a house and one of the main locations of the original series, The Flintstones and the rest of the franchise. Edises, a manager at Hewlett-Packard who bought the house for $800,000 in 1996, was a bit secretive about the old place at first, declining open houses or even agent tours. Growing up in China amid the horrors of World War II, Fang didn’t experience a carefree, idyllic childhood. But her mind remained a fantastical wonderland, and the eye-catching Flintstone House has provided an unexpected opportunity to bring some of her vivid dreams to life. HILLSBOROUGH, Calif. Overlooking the freeway and reservoir, it continues to serve as an unofficial California landmark and a lighthearted reminder of the Bay Area’s forward, yet sometimes quirky, thinking. This building technique, known as “monolithic dome construction,” was invented by the South brothers in Shelly, Idaho, in 1975. One year later, Bay Area architect William Nicholson built a series of domes using this method, including The Flintstone House in Hillsborough, California. The controversy has sparked international media coverage and an online petition signed by thousands to preserve the attention-grabbing property, visible from a nearby highway.

Sale closed in San Jose: $1.7 million for a three-bedroom home

For now, Fang still resides not far away in her longtime Hillsborough home, with traditional Chinese decor, Fang said — lots of gold tones and jade, not a Flintstones character in sight. She hosts family and friends at the Flintstone House, including Nicholson, the architect, several times. Once a cello player serenaded guests from the rooftop, accessible from the second story.

Inside the Bay Area’s famed Flintstone House

Not far away, she installed blue iridescent floors in a Gold Rush-themed room, adorned with 49ers — yes, the San Francisco football team — panning for gold. As 2020 faded into ’21, Fang installed a bright orange tiger, resembling the character Fang from a Flintstones spinoff, above the front door holding a heart-shaped sign welcoming in the new year and bidding good riddance to the last. “I feel happy,” said Fang, who bought the nearly 3,000-square-foot property, now worth more than $3.6 million, for $2.8 million in 2017. Nestled in an upmarket neighborhood south of San Francisco, the orange and purple, boulder-like abode visible from Interstate 280 has become a magnet for travelers and tourists, who often stop to take photos. The town’s lawsuit requested the judge to deem the property a public nuisance and order the statues to be taken down.

Law that ended single-family zoning is struck down for five Southern California cities

Fang, former publisher of the San Francisco Examiner, was sent multiple notices. After she failed to comply with stop-work orders, as well as an order to remove the collection of metal dinosaurs and animals from her backyard, the town took her to court in San Mateo County. The orange-and-purple home at 45 Berryessa Way in Hillsborough, located near a stretch of Interstate 280, has been fondly admired from afar for years. Fans of the unique abode, which bears a bulbous roof and dome-like rooms, have bestowed the circa-1976 property with the “Flintstone House” sobriquet due to its cartoonish, Stone Age appearance. David Levine, who specializes in civil litigation and remedies at the University of California Hastings College of the Law, said property owners flout permit regulations all the time.

The whimsical front yard has statues of Barney and Betty Rubble, along with Fred and Wilma. A steep staircase, deemed unsafe by town officials, leads to a garden of giant metal prehistoric animals. Hillsborough issued a building permit in November 2017 that allowed Fang to build a 2-foot-high retaining wall on the property. However, when officials visited the house for an inspection, they found extensive landscaping in the backyard, a new deck and a retaining wall on the side of the property that had been constructed to delineate an area for parking. Those changes fell outside the scope of the permit that had been issued by the town, according to the civil complaint filed in court.

When Hillsborough objected to some of her outdoor decorating choices, it issued stop work orders and ultimately filed the suit. She responded in part by alleging racial discrimination by city employees. As part of the recent settlement, the town agreed to cover Fang’s $125,000 in legal fees and said the dinosaurs, mushrooms and other yard decor could stay. It was designed in 1976 by William Nicholson and most recently purchased by Florence Fang in 2017 for $2.8 million. Large dinosaur statues and other Flintstone-themed artwork cover the front and back yards.

Many O.C. residents deny Trump election results, potentially swaying key races, poll finds

Following a lengthy court battle, the Northern California owner of the “Flintstone House” has quietly settled her lawsuit against the town of Hillsborough. But Iglesias says it's unusual for a homeowner to ignore three work-stop orders issued by the city, as the March 13 complaint states Fang did. She also ignored an administrative order to remove the installations by Dec. 5, 2018, although she paid a $200 fine. "Whether she is building a project with amusing cartoon characters or Rodin statues or anything else, she still has to go through the process like everyone else," he said. No one lives directly across from or behind the Flintstone House and residents in the comparatively vanilla homes on either side, she said, have not complained about their unusual neighbor. Its shape appealed to her, Fang said, since “round represents inclusive” — a not uncommon style in ancient times but a far cry from the sharp, square boxes typical of most suburbs today.

Upstairs is the smallest bedroom that could also be used as a painting studio or just a lounge space. The house is filled with artwork and sculptures added by the owner, Florence Fang. Regardless of ownership and neighborhood complaints, The Flintstone House remains standing.

It has a grassy front yard with a cobblestone walkway and a driveway and a grassy backyard with a pool. The multiple-dome-shaped structure was designed in 1976 by Bay Area architect William Nicholson as an experiment in new materials. During the 1980s, the residence was called the Barbapapa House after the children’s books of that name and a subsequent cartoon show.

Towering dinosaurs stand among fanciful mushrooms in the sloping backyard. And by the driveway on the lawn is a giant "Yabba Dabba Do" sign in orange, purple and red. The 2,730-square-foot house itself is not at stake, but the town of Hillsborough says Florence Fang's multimillion-dollar property is a public nuisance and an eyesore. Officials filed a lawsuit in state court last month to make her remove the unpermitted garden installations.

But her grandson, a recent college graduate, has spent the pandemic hunkered down at his grandmother’s place amid the stuffed tigers, watermelon-shaped pillows and, naturally, Flintstone figurines dotting the home. There was hardly anybody in there at the time, so I laid down on the floor, and I looked up at the (domed) ceiling. Town officials in Hillsborough filed a lawsuit against Fang, calling the house an eyesore that doesn't comply with the community standards. She says her house represents the idea of the American dream with all different kinds of creatures living together in harmony.

Drivers heading north to San Francisco on Interstate 280 will notice a peculiar home just east of the Eugene A. Doran Memorial Bridge. The house, playfully dubbed by Bay Area residents as The Flintstone House, is actually an experimental house built in 1976 with rooms in which every surface is rounded. Beneath its burnt orange (originally white) coat of paint is a slew of cement, rebar, plaster putty, wire mesh, and aeronautical balloons.

The Flintstone home is the home of the Flintstone family where Fred Flintstone lives along with his wife, Wilma, their daughter Pebbles and their family pet snorkasaurus, Dino and saber-toothed cat, Baby Puss. It is located in Bedrock with these addresses including 345 Cave Stone Road (in some episodes), 1313 Cobblestone Way or 222 Rocky Way. Other monikers have included the Dome House, the Gumby House and the Bubble House. The unusual shape of the three-bedroom, two-bathroom house was created by molding wire around large balloons and then spraying the surface with a high-velocity concrete known as gunite.

“They are designed to be very intrusive, resulting in the owner’s vision for her property being imposed on many other properties and views, without regard to the desires of other residents,” the administrative hearing panel wrote in its decision. Despite having only one bedroom, the property boasts two bathrooms, a fireplace, an open patio, and several large glass windows – there is plenty of natural light to illuminate the retreat that sits on 23 acres of land. There is also the added bonus of the spectacular views of Serrano Valley, the Boney Mountains, the Channel Islands, and the Pacific Ocean. Maybe it's just me, but I feel it's fitting for Ryan Seacrest to continue following in Clark's footsteps by purchasing this home. In the entry, she added a statue of the Wilma character and plans to one day install a button that people can press to hear the red-headed Mrs. Flintstone talk about the house. The octogenarian, who moved to the U.S. in the early 1960s, doesn’t live in the home in part for security reasons — it regularly draws tourists trying to get a closer glimpse at the dinosaur sculptures visible from the freeway.

On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier. The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier has been moving its mass towards the ocean at a rate faster than most of its kind. Towering above the water over 30 stories, the glacier often calves 100-foot chunks of ice into the ocean.

Some of the most expensive excursions include flights on small planes and helicopters, but they tend to be the most popular as well, like the Denali Flightseeing tours and helicopter tours of surrounding glaciers. After days of hiking, exploring Alaska’s small communities, whale watching, dancing all night, and maybe having one too many cocktails, it’s nice to be pampered. The Royal Princess’ onboard Lotus Spa brings you to a place of peace and Zen with services like traditional massage, acupuncture, facials like the La Therapie HydraLift facial, couples massage, and Aroma Stone Therapy Massage. The Alaska Cruisetour I was on started from Vancouver and sailed through Alaska’s Inside Passage through some of the most beautiful scenery I’d ever seen. With glaciers, waterfalls, misty mountains, and otters and whales frolicking in the waves, it would be a crime not to take it all in.

Don't Bet on Wildlife ...

No one does seafood quite like Alaska—which is why we brought the best of the Great Land on board, so you can experience it all with Princess. Tundra Wilderness Tours are operating smoothly again in Denali National Park & Preserve, though with a shortened route due to the Pretty Rocks Landslide at Mile 45 of Denali Park Road. (There’s no firm timeframe yet on when the road will be passable again.) Pick-ups take place steps from the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge lobby, allowing guests to practically roll out of bed and go.

But while it’s important to book experiences (it’s why you’re in Alaska, after all), it’s also important to leave yourself a little leeway. The largest cruise and tour operator in Alaska, Princess gives travelers the opportunity to combine a Gulf of Alaska cruise with the interior of Alaska experience. The “land” portion of our cruisetours include the state’s most popular areas, such as Anchorage, Denali National Park, Talkeetna, Copper River and the Kenai Peninsula. Princess owns and operates five wilderness lodge properties and several luxury railcars known as Princess Rail.

Go flightseeing by Denali’s snow-covered peak, fly-fish for Arctic grayling, raft the Nenana River or venture into Denali on a park tour. And then there’s the fact that you see different things on land and by sea. On my tour, I felt I got a better overview of Alaska and a better feel for its expansiveness during the land portion, which I appreciated seeing first. Then, when I got to the coastal towns on the cruise, I was able to appreciate them for their quaint charm. I also saw a lot more wildlife on the land portion, which meant any animals I saw during the cruise were just a bonus. With 12 days of adventure, it would be impossible for me to list all the land and sea excursions available through the Royal Princess Cruisetour.

Or cast your rod into Kenai River, one of the most popular destinations for fishing in Alaska, and reel in your own souvenir. Once the gateway to Alaska's Gold Rush, Skagway strikes a dramatic image nestled between the water's edge and mountains. Follow in the footsteps of miners with a ride on a scenic train along the famous White Pass route through coastal mountains. During your Alaska cruise, explore the Yukon's pristine wilderness, pan for gold with professionals or meet sled dog puppies in training.

Push notifications, reminders of upcoming events and an overall faster MedallionClass App experience are a few enhancements still in the works. He had come onboard Princess Cruises’Royal Princess to talk about fishing and crabbing in some of the most dangerous waters in the world — the Bering Sea. His visit was part of the Discovery at Sea program (a Princess partnership with Discovery and Animal Planet), and his enthusiasm about our stop in Ketchikan was contagious. Tucked in the coastal mountains around Juneau, this nearly 14-mile-long glacier cuts through the landscape and ends in a freshwater lake. Not to mention, its forests burst from every inch of terrain, creating a true wonderland of nature.
